U.S. Launches Massive Strikes on Iraq

Reports of the attack began just after noon EST, as television stations began reporting anti-aircraft bursts over the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

In southern Iraq, the Associated Press said that several small oil well fires had been detected. On the news, oil prices spiked, Bloomberg reported, but after the attacks began prices receded.

As of about 1:30 p.m. EST, crude oil was trading down about 4% from Wednesday’s close to $28.71 a barrel, Bloomberg reported.

Some military analysts and news reports suggested that this was just another in a series of ramp-ups to the “shock and awe” campaign promised by U.S. military officials.
