UPS Inc. plans to hire 95,000 seasonal employees for jobs to run between November and January because of the shipping surge during the holiday shopping season, the company announced Sept. 14.

It's the third straight year that the Atlanta-based parcel carrier expects to hire approximately 95,000 employees. The jobs will be for package handlers, drivers and driver-helpers.

“For many it’s an opportunity to earn some extra cash for the holidays,” CEO David Abney said. “But with many of our holiday hires getting permanent jobs with us, it can also be a gateway to a career.”

More than 37% of those hired as package handlers during the 2012 to 2014 holiday seasons are later hired for permanent jobs, according to UPS.

Shippers will soon be paying more to send packages and freight using ground, air and international services. UPS announced that less-than-truckload rates will increase 4.9% on average beginning Sept. 19. The carrier will also increase package and international rates, but it won’t take effect until the day after Christmas.

UPS ranks No. 1 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
