UPS expects to deliver 1.3 million returned packages to retailers on Jan. 5, which the company has dubbed "National Returns Day," according to a press release from the company.

UPS ranks No. 1 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

More than 5.8 million returns packages will be shipped by UPS in the first full week of January, the company predicted. This year broke records for e-commerce sales, which is driving another record for the new year, returns on those gifts, which UPS expects to reach a new peak on Jan. 5.

In 2016, shoppers returned more than 1 million packages on National Returns Day and 5 million packages during the peak returns week, the release stated.

“Online shoppers want the same level of choice, control and convenience making their returns as they do making their purchases,” Teresa Finley, chief marketing officer for UPS, said in a statement.

“UPS helps retailers provide shoppers with a satisfying returns experience while managing rising returns volume and the complexities of providing a seamless omnichannel shopping experience,” said Finley.
