UPS Inc. expects to hire 95,000 temporary workers this year to help it with the annual holiday surge, when daily shipments rise by more than half.
The mix of full- and part-time package handlers, drivers and driver helpers will be at about the same level added over the past couple years by the world’s largest package-delivery company. About 35% of the temporary workers go on to land permanent positions, UPS said Sept. 20 in a statement.
The Atlanta-based company is taking steps to cope with the explosive growth of online shopping, which has tested its network of planes, delivery trucks and sorting facilities.
Its daily shipping volume exceeded 30 million packages in the 2016 holiday season, compared with typical non-peak volume of 19 million packages, UPS has said.
This year, UPS is implementing a new peak surcharge on packages shipped to U.S. residences over certain weeks between late November and December.
It will add a 27-cent charge to packages sent using its ground network and a charge of 81 cents or 97 cents for air-shipped packages, depending on level of service.
FedEx Corp. on Sept. 19 said it expects to hire more than 50,000 seasonal workers for its peak season. FedEx ranks No. 2 on the TT Top 100 for-hire list.
