ackage carriers DHL and UPS Inc. said Monday they had resumed operations in the areas hit by Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast.

UPS said it resumed service to parts of New Orleans’ central business district and sections of the city’s French Quarter. Outside New Orleans, UPS said it had reopened 21 of its 22 affected buildings in the region and restored delivery service to every ZIP code in Mississippi and Alabama.

UPS, ranked No. 1 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers, also has resumed daily air flights into and out of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

Outside New Orleans where it is still impossible to make regular deliveries, UPS said it has opened a "hold-for-pickup" site in Metairie, La., for customers who want to retrieve packages on their own.

DHL, No. 4 on the TT 100, said it will be reinitiating service to the impacted areas by opening the DHL Express stations in New Orleans and Covington, La., which will allow it to serve customers along the Gulf Coast with the exception of those areas completely inaccessible due to damage and flooding from the hurricane.
