PS Inc. said Thursday it will close the Dayton, Ohio, air-freight hub it acquired in December.

UPS acquired the facility when it bought Menlo Worldwide Forwarding in December, it said in a statement.

The move will eliminate 1,400 jobs, a UPS spokesman told Transport Topics. The company said it would provide severance packages for employees affected by the closure.

The facility will close in mid-2006, UPS said. The decision was a “difficult one and was made after analyzing the significant redundancies” between UPS and Menlo’s air-cargo networks, UPS said in its statement.

Spokesman Dan McMackin told TT that UPS had not yet decided where it would handle "the bulk of the work" handled by Dayton once it closes.

UPS said last October when it first announced the Menlo acquisition that it would add more overnight and two-day air shipments of heavier freight.

Menlo, which was a unit of CNF Inc., provided heavy airfreight forwarding services, ocean services and international trade management, including customs brokerage. It had $1.9 billion in gross revenues in 2003.

UPS is ranked No. 1 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
