Universal Truckload Services Posts Higher Profits

ruckload carrier Universal Truckload Services said it posted higher profits for the 2004 fourth quarter and year as freight demand remained strong and because the company expanded its network of owner-operators and brokers.

Warren, Mich., Universal said it posted net income of $3.5 million on revenue of $114 million for the period ended Dec. 31. That compared with net income of $2.6 million on revenue of $75 million a year earlier.

For the year, Universal posted net income of $11 million on revenue of $362 million. That compared with net income of $8.7 million on revenue of $277 million for 2003.



Universal Chief Executive Officer Don Cochran said in a statement that the company had increased its use of owner-operators by 30% since December 2003.

Revenues generated through third-party carriers also increased by $34.7 million in 2004, representing an 80.8% increase over 2003, he said.
