UAW Files Unfair Labor Charge Against Peterbilt

The United AutoWorkers said Monday that it has filed unfair labor practice charges against Peterbilt Motors, a division of truck maker Paccar Inc. stemming from a situation that has idled 700 workers at the company's Madison, Tenn. factory.

The charges, filed with the National Labor Relations Board’s office in Memphis, Tenn., state that Peterbilt refused to provide the union with information it requested.

"UAW has placed multiple information requests and we have complied expeditiously and accurately where information is available," Joe Scattergood, plant manager, told Transport Topics.

The four-year contract with the union expired Aug. 31, Scattergood said and the company made offers to improve wages and pension, hoping that both sides would focus on a new contract and that the company cannot work without a contract, he said.

The next meeting after [Aug. 31] was held on Sept. 12, Scattergood said. The parities also met on the Sept. 13, Sept. 19 and Sept. 20, at which time the company presented another offer.

The union declined to take the offer to a vote and there has been no movement since.

Paccar is the country's third largest truck maker, manufacturing trucks under the Kenworth, Peterbilt, DAF and Foden nameplates. Transport Topics
