TTPG Publications Win Press Honors

All of the group’s publications brought home award plaques, including the weekly TRANSPORT TOPICS newspaper, the monthly magazines Light & Medium Truck and Utility Fleet Management, and TT’s quarterly technology supplement iTECH.
TTPG Publisher Howard S. Abramson said that “I am proud of our writers, editors and production staff for garnering awards from a group that judges many of the leading business publications in the country. The ASBPE awards are the only ones in which editors judge entries, so this is a peer review.
Under the category for regular column, staff written, TT reporter Daniel L. Whitten won both the national silver and regional gold awards for his essays appearing in the August and Winter editions of iTECH.
Whitten wrote about the quest for new business models in “Some Dot.Coms Go Back to the Drawing Board” and about the rush to security when he composed “In Need of a Policy for the Technology.”
Jim Galligan, editor of Light & Medium Truck, pulled in national bronze and regional silver awards for writing a how-to article in the June 2001 issue on diagnosing tire failures.
Galligan also received a regional bronze award for signed editorial writing for his “Stuck in Traffic” and “No More for the Road” pieces in L&MT’s September and November issues.
Michael J. Varhola, who is managing editor for both monthlies, also won a regional bronze plaque for his regular column in Utility Fleet Management. Varhola was cited for his work on “Today’s Technology — A Step Ahead of the Future” and for “Battling Storms in the New Century” in the June and October UFM issues.
TRANSPORT TOPICS also competed for the first time in ASBPE’s graphics competition, winning a bronze regional award for the innovative Dec. 17 front cover design that spliced photos around text to give readers a panoramic look at a crowded editorial forum with industry officials. Patrick Donlon, assistant director for arts and production, designed the cover.
Abramson said the new awards will be displayed inside the TTPG suite, where they will join TRANSPORT TOPICS’s first ASBPE national award, a gold it won in 2000 for government coverage.
