The processes in place today for obtaining chassis to haul intermodal shipping containers from ports can be traced, in part, to an announcement in 2009 by Maersk, the world’s largest ocean freight carrier, that it would charge local truckers for the use of its equipment.

While many truckers protested, as reflected in this June 29, 2009 edition of Transport Topics, the move stimulated debate that continues today over who is responsible for ownership and maintenance of chassis.
