ransport Topics announced changes to the management team of the weekly newspaper, promoting Neil Abt to news editor and adding Michael Verespej as deputy news editor. Reporter Roger Gilroy was elevated to senior business reporter.

As deputy news editor, Verespej will oversee production of feature articles and would assist in editing weekly news stories.

Verespej comes to TT with 35 years experience in business journalism. He was a writer and editor at Industry Week magazine, a business publication with a circulation of more than 250,000. Transportation and logistics were among the broad range of business subjects Verespej covered during his 28-year career at Industry Week.

He also served as editor-in-chief of four different publications: Frontline Solutions, a magazine focused on supply-chain issues; Lift Applications and Equipment and Crane Works, two magazines that cover the construction industry; and Purchasing magazine.

He got his start in journalism as a news and sports reporter for the Cleveland News-Herald.

“We are fortunate to add a news professional of Michael’s caliber to our staff,” said Howard Abramson, publisher and editorial director of Transport Topics Publishing Group.

“His expertise will allow us to continue to offer our readers a strong and solid newspaper each week.”

Verespej will report to Abt, who has been promoted to news editor, from assistant news editor. Abt manages the newspaper’s reporting staff, assigns and edits news stories and helps manage production of the newspaper.

Abt came to TT as a Web editor in March 2001 from America Online, where he spent three years. He also spent two years covering sports for the Washington Post. Abt reports to Bruce Harmon, TT’s managing editor.

Gilroy joined the TT staff in 2003. He has been responsible for covering truck manufacturers and their suppliers, as well as a variety of business subjects from freight hauling to technology and maintenance issues.

Prior to joining TT, Gilroy worked for Business Publishers, where he served as managing editor of the newsletter. He was in charge of the publisher’s contract, in-house editors and editorial assistants. He also produced a bi-weekly newsletter on hazardous materials transportation.

“These moves help us strengthen the editing and business reporting team at the freight industry’s leading newspaper,” Abramson said.
