Today's Technology Headlines:

U.S. Readies Asia-Based Trade Portal

The U.S. Department of Commerce plans to establish a global Internet portal in the Philippines in an effort to increase trade and improve logistics. According to Jerry Mitchell, acting director-general of the U.S. Commercial Service, an arm of the Commerce Department, the Asian version of BuyUSA.com will be launched in Manila as a result of growing bilateral trade and investment ties. The portal will allow U.S. exporters to accumulate company and product information, arrange live or virtual meetings with suppliers, shop for payment and financing options, and complete shipping and insurance arrangements.

The Philippines site will be followed by ones in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, and other countries in the region. In a separate deal, a Chinese and American partnership formed the itdn.quoteforum.com site, which the companies predict could generate trades opportunities worth $2.5 billion annually for small- and medium-sized companies. Use of Internet Saves Shipment Data Costs

Overnite Transportation has implemented MyOvernite, an Internet-based tool, to reduce shipment information distribution expenses. Previously, Overnite employees sent 180,000 pages of data via fax per month, spent many hours searching for missing pages and re-faxing them, and the information often did not contain what the customers needed.

The new system allows customers to view in report form online all the available information on their shipments. Overnite also plans to start using InterGis' Visual Control Room routing and scheduling system, hoping to reduce mileage, fuel costs, and travel time by about 25%.
