Today's Technology Headlines:

Qualcomm Offers Safety Service

Qualcomm has introduced a new satellite-based safety service for aircraft.

The technology is able to send email photographs, audio, and video between an airplane and the ground. The objective of the new technology is to make aircraft safer by placing them in continuous contact with ground control. Before the recent terrorist attacks, Qualcomm had attempted to sell the same satellite services as a passenger frill, providing passengers with links for Internet use and email. According to Irwin Jacobs, chairman of San Diego-based Qualcomm, that plan fell apart in April because of a lack of demand from the airlines.

Qualcomm is in fact one of a number of companies that want to use satellites to increase airplane security. Boeing's Connexion division has proposed a similar plan, as has Iridium Satellite. Investor's Business Daily (11/06/01) P. A8; Sleeper, Sarah Z.

CSC and GoReefers Sign Marketing Pact

GoReefers International and Container Services have signed an operations agreement to market and deploy Container Services' Cryo-Power containers for frozen cargoes.

For many years, the only way to ship frozen goods via international, marine container service was in refrigerated, mechanical containers, which required special handling in the terminal, on the vessel, and to and from the terminal. Container Service's Cryo-Power container is able to mover frozen goods in a more efficient manner through the innovative use of cryogenic technology, with CO2 as the refrigerant. Because the containers are non-mechanical, they do not require monitoring, mechanical maintenance, or an outside power source. This allows the containers to be transported on all kinds of conveyances designed to haul ocean freight containers, and this flexibility in turn allows for lower rates of carriage for the containers, and thus saves shippers money.

The CSC/GoReefers venture has the exclusive right to use the CSC cryogenic container for all frozen goods on trade routes between Africa, China, New Zealand, the United States, South America, and Europe. eyefortransport (11/06/01)

Crowley Units Buy Tracking Software

Two of Crowley Maritime's business units are planning to use logistics and transportation software from G-Log to expand their businesses and improve customer service.

Crowley Marine Services, which provides specialized marine logistics and transportation services, and Crowley Logistics, which provides third-party logistics services, will be implementing G-Log's GC3 solution. According to Tim Gleason, director of business solutions for Crowley Logistics, both business units will use the software for tracking, tracing, and managing shipments. Gleason added that the software will be used primarily for Crowley's third-party logistics activities, which encompass nonvessel-operating common carriers, marine, freight forwarding, intermodal, and rail operations.

On the Marine Services side, Gleason said, the software will be used for Crowley's energy logistics business. In separate news, Tesco Stores, which is the largest food retailer in the United Kingdom and has over 930 stores worldwide, announced recently that it will be implementing G-Log's software to help it manage it inbound shipping of over 20,000 product lines. G-Log's software will enable the British company to work more closely with partners, suppliers, and logistics service providers. In addition, the software will be able to select the most cost-effective carrier for the British company, consolidate loads, and provide visibility of in-transit orders.
