Trucking to Increase Its Share of Nation's Freight to 69.2%, Says ATA Forecast

he trucking industry will increase to 69.2% its share of all freight tonnage moved throughout the U.S. by 2008, according to American Trucking Associations’ U.S. Freight Transportation Forecast to 2017.

The soon-to-be-released forecast also projects that total rail tonnage will rise to 14.7% in 2017, ATA said in a statement.

Air and rail intermodal will be the fastest-growing segments during the forecast period, though neither mode will have more than 1.5% of the total tonnage market by 2017.



Water passage which accounted for 6.6% of the domestic transport market in 2005, is expected to expand by 2.6% a year over the next six years and 1.9% a year thereafter to 2017.

In addition, the forecast says pipeline will transport 9.1% of freight volume, down from 9.9% in 2005.
