LAS VEGAS — Leading heavy-duty truck components manufacturers said technology exists today to build a safer, environmentally friendly and low-cost heavy-duty “world truck,” but major obstacles are consumer acceptance and the lack of a single global standard for emissions and safety technology. The components manufacturers also defended their role as independent suppliers in a North American heavy-duty truck industry that is moving toward European-style, vertically integrated products. The manufacturers spoke here Jan. 22 at a daylong session on globalization for representatives of the heavy-duty parts and truck-building industries, sponsored by the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association. For the full story, see the Jan. 29 print edition of Transport Topics.
