John Henry Cook, a driver for Baylor Trucking for 12 years and a retired Army Staff Sergeant, died June 28. He was 50.

Cook was the master driver for the Milan, Indiana, company and requested that he go to his grave in a company truck.

He was considered a mentor to fellow truck drivers as well as his Army peers and friends of his children.

A long-haul driver, Cook said he loved over-the-road trucking and that he didn’t live in a house but in his truck. He served 20 years in the U.S. Army, joining when he was 19 as an indirect fire infantryman.

He was deployed to the Middle East for Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield as well as to Somalia in August 1993 for Operation Restore Hope.

While in the Army, he served as a power generation equipment repairman for about 10 years and was promoted to Staff Sergeant in 1997.

He married his wife Pamela on April 6, 1989 in El Paso, Texas and is the father of son, Allan, and daughter, Jamie.

Cook enjoyed fishing, hunting and working with his rose bushes and flower beds.

He is survived by his wife and children, brother, seven sisters and his mother, Rosella Keeton.
