new tropical storm formed off the Florida Wednesday morning but it was not likely to become a hurricane, news and weather reports said.

The National Hurricane Center said that Tropical Storm Tammy’s center was about 20 miles east of Cape Canaveral, Fla., and moving to the north-northwest at 16 mph, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

The system’s maximum sustained winds were about 40 mph and a meteorologist at the NHC told the paper it was unlikely that Tammy would reach minimum hurricane strength of 74 mph.

A large area of coastline along Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina was being threatened by the storm because, forecasters said, it was unclear if, when or where the storm would reach land, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
