he Department of Transportation said Monday the transportation services index increased 0.5% in September to 125.1. It is 6.6% higher than a year earlier, DOT said in a statement.

DOT said the TSI for freight also rose 0.5% in September to 126.2. It has risen 0.8% over the past six months and was 6.4% higher than September 2003.

TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.

The index includes data dating back to 1990, with changes measured against the base year of 1996. DOT said TSI is still under development and is considered experimental.

The report also noted the passengers index increased 0.4%, following two months of declines.
