ruckload carrier Transport Corp. of America Inc. reported Tuesday its first-quarter earnings were $94,000 or 1 cent a share, compared with $71,000 or 1 cent the year before.

The company’s revenue fell slightly, to $61.4 million from $62.1 million a year ago.

“Although freight demand was softer in the first quarter compared to 2004, we continue to improve our operating fundamentals,” Chief Executive Officer Michael Paxton said in a statement.

He said the company’s revenue per loaded mile rose 4% to $1.53 in the quarter and its average freight revenue per tractor per week rose to $2,887 from $2,797 a year ago. Both excluded fuel surcharges.

The company said its accident rate per million miles was one of its lowest for the first quarter in its history.

Transport Corporation of America is ranked No. 67 on the Transport Topics 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian trucking companies.
