ruck trailer maker Wabash National Corp. reported a first-quarter profit of $18.5 million or 52 cents a share, up from $6.9 million or 23 cents last year.

Net sales for the quarter rose to $256.1 million, from $221.6 million in the previous first quarter, Wabash said in a statement.

The company said new trailer sales of 11,200 for the quarter were comparable to last year. Its backlog at the end of the quarter was about $500 million.

“Gross margins surged past the 2004 highs as we benefited from the effects of favorable customer and product mix, and raw materials prices in line with expectations,” said Wabash Chief Executive Officer William Greubel.
