he Florida Highway Patrol shut down a 20-mile stretch of Interstate 75 near the southern Gulf Coast of the state early Friday morning after bomb-sniffing dogs found potential explosives in two cars, the Associated Press reported.

Known as "Alligator Alley," I-75 is a major cross-Florida highway that runs between Naples on the west to near Fort Lauderdale on the east.

The road was still closed as of 8 a.m. EDT, and three men have been detained, AP said. The highway patrol said the road was blocked between mile markers 80 and 100, or from a tollbooth east of Naples, which is on the Gulf coast of Florida, to State Road 29.

MSNBC said traffic was being routed over U.S. 41, which is also known as the Tamiami Trail.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued an advisory after a waitress in Calhoun, Ga. told police she overheard three men of Middle Eastern descent discussing terrorist plans Wednesday night.
