North Dakota Offering Free WiFi at Rest Stops

Free wireless internet access is now available free of charge at nine visitors’ centers along Interstate 94 and Interstate 29 in North Dakota, the state’s transportation department said.

No login name, password or cost is involved, N.D. DOT said. The coverage at each visitors’ center includes the rest area lobbies, and the car and truck parking lots.

“Installing wireless internet access was a logical ‘next step’ in providing travel services to the North Dakotans, out-of-state visitors, and commercial carriers who use our interstates,” said David Sprynczynatyk, director of N.D. DOT.

The wireless “hot spots” use WiFi-certified access points operating on the 802.11b standard, which is compatible with most wireless-enabled devices used in North America. Users simply scan for available wireless networks; then connect to the network that starts with “DOT.” Transport Topics

Detroit-Windsor Tunnel Offers Real-Time Traffic Updates

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel said Monday it has expanded the availability of real-time tunnel traffic information.

Travelers between Windsor and Detroit will be able to obtain real time traffic conditions at the tunnel by clicking on www.dwtunnel.com.

The Web-based service “will provide a real time camera view of the Tunnel's Detroit and Windsor plazas,” said Neal Belitsky, the tunnel’s general manager.

“These, among other, web enhancements demonstrates our commitment to the next 75 years of serving the community and meeting our commitment to the 25% Challenge offered by the governments of the United States and Canada,” he said.

The tunnel also said it is also evaluating adding text-messaging and e-mail notifications as another value added service to its customers. Transport Topics
