IBM Develops RFID for Containers
IBM Corp. said Tuesday it had developed a new radio frequency identification system to provide cargo-container information to inspectors before the containers arrive at ports.Current technologies do not allow inspectors to get real-time security data about cargo containers except when it is at a port, said IBM, which plans to test the technology on vessels operated by Swedish shipping company A.P. Software Firm CollectiveData Introduces New Fuel Card
Software provider CollectiveData Inc. said it introduced a new card that allows fleets to track fuel costs as part of a truck’s overall operating expenses.The Integrated Fleet Solutions card resulted from collaboration with Wright Express, a provider of fuel cards to the trucking industry, CollectiveData said in a statement.
The card can be used at any of 41,000 locations that accept Wright Express fuel cards, CollectiveData said.
The company said that in addition to tracking fuel costs, the card allows users to monitor maintenance and odometer information.
Bill Wessels, CollectiveData’s marketing director, said although the company had developed software for smaller trucking companies in the past, “we’re looking to target fleets with more than 100 trucks.” Tarun Reddy, Transport Topics
Navteq’s Map Systems to Power Garmin GPS Phones
Navteq, a provider of digital maps for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, said it had expanded its relationship with Garmin International to be the digital map provider for Garmin MobileGarmin Mobile, a new application that leverages Garmin's expertise in portable automotive navigation, delivers maps, directions, and automatic turn-by-turn routing to wireless phones.
The application is Garmin's first product offering in the location-based services market, and is currently offered by Sprint. Transport Topics
