Qualcomm Preparing System to Track Untethered Trailers

Communications company Qualcomm Inc. said Monday at the Truckload Carriers’ Association convention that it has begun to a develop system for tracking untethered trailers to compliment its tethered trailer-tracking system.

The San Diego-based company said that it has provided tracking services for tethered trailers since 1989. It said that it is now beginning to develop the next phase of trailer-tracking technology with its plan to track untethered trailers.

The company also said that it has either renewed the contracts of, or signed up for the first time, 45 customers for its OmniTRACS vehicle tracking system.

Comdata Reaches Agreement with Document Company

Comdata Corp. said Friday that it has reached an agreement with Scanware Inc. to provide a Web-based document retrieval system for truckers.

Scanware Inc., based in Spring City, Pa., provides automated document scanning services for the trucking industry, and by partnering with Comdata, users will be able to retrieve their documents online.

Currently, the company processes about 80,000 driver logs each day through its Log Scan and EZLog Machine.

Comdata, a provider of transaction and information services, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ceridian Corp. Transport Topics

Land Air Selects WebTech for Wireless Fleet Management

Land Air Express Inc. selected WebTech Wireless Inc. to provide it with a GPS-based wireless fleet management system, WebTech announced Monday.

Land Air said it selected WebTech’s Quadrant System for fleet management because it provides “real-time” access to its vehicles on the road and Global Positioning System information.

Based in Burnaby, British Columbia, WebTech provides a wide array of wireless communication services including fleet tracking, Internet access and messaging.

Land Air Express is an expedited carrier providing service to 15 states and Canada based in Bowling Green, Ky. Transport Topics

Transflo Reaches Deals with Two Carriers

Transflo Express, an electronic document storage and delivery service, said Thursday that it has signed deals with Prime Inc. and P.A.M. Transportation Services Inc.

Users of Transflo Express, the company said, can hand over shipping or log documents to a fuel desk attendant at a participating truck stops and that attendant can scan and send that document to the fleet.

Prime, an irregular-route refrigerated, flatbed and tanker carrier, is ranked No. 34 on the 2002 Transport Topics 100 listing of the largest trucking companies in the United States and Canada. Truckload carrier P.A.M. is ranked No. 69 in the same list. Transport Topics
