Norpass and E-ZPass Cooperate
The North American Preclearance and Safety System announced that trucking companies can now participate in both its weigh station bypass program and the E-ZPass electronic toll collection using the same transponder.Norpass, which allows qualified truckers to drive past weigh stations in 10 states, said in a Dec. 12 statement that Judge Manning Horse Transportation of Amenia, N.Y., had become the first carrier to take advantage of the new interoperable service.
E-ZPass enables motorists to electronically pay tolls in seven states.

Nevada Toughens Its Emissions Rules
The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles said in a Dec. 20 announcement that the state’s truck emissions standards were to become stricter Jan. 1.The three-tiered standards, which govern the opacity of smoke emitted by trucks, are the same rules adopted by many other states and recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Opacity is a measure of how much light can pass through smoke. Newer trucks will have to meet stricter standards.
Nevada’s Environmental Commission approved the tougher standards in October, but the DMV Compliance Enforcement Division had been issuing warnings until January.
