Tape Retrofit in Effect Except for Intermodal

A federal regulation requiring an estimated 800,000 older heavy-duty trailers and semi-trailers to be equipped with reflective tape or markers went into effect June 1.

However, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration did extend the deadline for approximately 180,000 intermodal trailers until Dec. 1.

The rule now in effect applies to trailers and semi-trailers made before Dec. 1, 1993, with an overall width of 80 inches or more and a gross-vehicle-weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds. They must have reflective tape or markers applied to the sides and ends.
