reight railroad Union Pacific Corp. said Wednesday the California storms had shut down almost all train service in the Los Angeles area, Bloomberg reported.

A series of storms have dumped 17 inches of rain on downtown Los Angeles from Dec. 28 through Tuesday morning, the wettest 15-day period ever recorded for the area, according to the National Weather Service.

Spokeswoman Kathryn Blackwell told Bloomberg that Union Pacific stopped using its tracks in the area and operated just four of a typical daily volume of 80 train on Tuesday by using Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp.'s tracks.

In a letter to customers, Executive Vice President Jack Koraleski said recovery in the area would be “slow” and depend on weather, Bloomberg said.
