Senate Moves Jobs Bill Forward

Senate Democrats overcame a Republican filibuster of a bill aimed at decreasing unemployment that includes a long extension of the federal highway program.

The jobs bill, which also includes a hiring tax credit, accelerated depreciation of equipment purchases and an expansion of the Build America Bonds program, would extend the current highway bill through the end of 2010.

On Monday, the Senate voted to cut off debate by a 61-30 margin and a vote on final passage of the bill is expected Wednesday. Six Republicans broke ranks and supported the measure.

The House previously passed the bill so Senate passage would send it to President Obama for his signature.
