Sen. Public Works Chairman Sets Funding Priorities

WASHINGTON — Reducing highway fatalities, alleviating congestion and increasing security have emerged as top funding priorities in the next multiyear highway bill, according to the head of a key Senate authorizing committee.

Chairman James Jeffords (I-Vt.) of the Environment and Public Works Committee called these topics “a few of the common threads” his committee will discuss in this session of Congress.

Jeffords also said that “railroads should play a more important role in getting freight off the road.” And he asked what could be done to get “400-foot trucks” off city streets. He did not elaborate, and calls to his office were not returned.
