Border Security Chief Robert Bonner to Retire

Customs and Border Protection Commission Robert Bonner plans to retire, the Department of Homeland Security said Wednesday.

Bonner submitted notification of his retirement to President Bush earlier this week, DHS said in a statement. In order to allow for a smooth transition, his retirement date has not yet been set, the department said.

Bonner was sworn in as Commissioner of U.S. Customs on Sept. 24, 2001, and since March 1, 2003, he served as the first Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency.

Bonner’s “guidance and efforts have been instrumental in balancing our need to preserve the integrity of our borders without sacrificing the free flow of commerce on which our nation and the global community depends,” DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff said in a statement. Transport Topics
