FMCSA to Hold Listening Session

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will hold on Nov. 16 a listening session to obtain feedback regarding its effort to improve the way it monitors and assesses the safety performance of the commercial vehicle industry.

The new approach will focus on interacting with more carriers on a regular basis through the agency's Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 initiative, FMCSA said in a statement.

Safefreight’s SmartFleet System Selected for TSA’s Hazmat Security Program

Telematics provider Safefreight Technology said its SmartFleet GPS tracking system will be used as part of the Transportation Security Administration’s Hazmat Truck Security Pilot program.

Under a $3.1 million TSA contract, defense contractor General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems will implement and demonstrate the SmartFleet system, Safefreight said in a statement.

The SmartFleet system provides security, tracking, monitoring, control and reporting capability for dry van and tank trailers transporting hazardous cargo. Transport Topics


Bridge Repairs Could Cost $63 Billion, Says FHWA

The Federal Highway Administration said upgrading aging bridges in the United States could cost up to $63 billion, the USA Today reported last Friday.

An analysis conducted by The Road Information Program revealed about 26% of the nation’s bridges are either in need of repair or not designed to support their current traffic loads, the USA Today reported.

Bridges in the Northeast, where transportation infrastructure is often older and subject to harsh winters, are in the greatest need of repair, USA Today said. Transport Topics
