Turnpike Authority May Eliminate Tolls on Mass. Pike West of 128
The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority planned to vote Wednesday on a proposal that would eliminate tolls on the Massachusetts Turnpike west of Route 128, the Associated Press reported. The proposal is part of a report prepared by former Massachusetts finance secretary Eric Kriss which states that the loss of revenue from eliminating the tolls would be offset by laying off more than 400 toll collectors and shifting administrative and maintenance responsibilities for the road to the state Highway Department, AP said.
WiFi Wireless Starting Cargo Container Security Unit
WiFi Wireless Inc. announced last Thursday it will create a new business unit to focus on the large scale deployment of its wireless cargo container security system. The new unit, WiFi Systems Integration and Deployment, will provide delivery services for the company’s security system components to client installations.
The move follows President Bush's signing last Friday of new legislation that will ramp up security requirements for U.S. port operators and the shippers and carriers using the port facilities.Transport Topics
Volvo Debuts ‘Integrated Safety Truck’
Volvo last Monday debuted its “integrated safety truck” at the Itelligent Transportation Systems World Conference in London. The truck is designed to prevent accidents by using a series of sensors and monitors that track conditions around the vehicle and alert the driver in the event of a change, such as the truck drifting out of its lane.
The truck was developed as part of the European Union’s Integrated Safety Program, in which Volvo is the sole participant to focus on heavy vehicles. Transport Topics
