Arrest Made in DOT Laptop Theft Case

Authorities have arrested a suspect who is believed to have stolen in July a Department of Transportation lap from a government vehicle in Doral, Fla., that contained the personal identification information of more than 80,000 Miami-Dade county commercial driver’s license holders, DOT said Tuesday.

The suspect admitted to stealing a number of laptops, from which he then had existing data erased so that he could reinstall an operating system and sell the computers.

He denied stealing the DOT laptop, though surveillance footage taken by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, wherein the bureau used a decoy laptop in hopes of luring the thief, showed the suspect using the same method to break into the decoy vehicle that was employed in the July theft.

As with earlier reports, DOT said it did not believe the crime was motivated by a desire to exploit the data on the computer for identity-theft purposes.

Investigation of a similar theft in April, where a thief made off with a DOT laptop left in a conference room at an Orlando hotel, is ongoing, DOT. (Click here for previous coverage.)Transport Topics

Ontario Transportation Minister Supports Speed Limiters, Says New HOS Rules Will Roll Out as Planned

Ontario Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield On Monday addressed the Ontario Trucking Association’s 80th annual convention, offering her support for mandatory, province-wide speed-limiter settings and confirming the roll-out of new hours of service regulations for 2007.

Cansfield said she is receptive to the idea of requiring all trucks in the Canadian province to set their speed-limiters to about 60 miles an hour, and that new hours of service regulations will go into effect for the province on Jan. 1, OTA said in a statement.

Cansfield also said the province would adopt the revised National Safety Code Standard for daily pre-trip inspections in early 2007 and that she would consider an OTA proposal for a revised program for retesting truck drivers once they reach the age of 65. Transport Topics
