Mack to Sponsor Share the Road in 2007
Mack Trucks announced Monday it will be a primary sponsor of American Trucking Associations’ Share the Road program in 2007.2007 will mark Mack’s seventh consecutive year as a Share the Road sponsor, the truck maker said in a statement.
ATA’s Share the Road Program is designed enhance highway safety by teaching car drivers how to safely drive around large trucks. Transport Topics
Bush Signs Border Fence Bill
President Bush last Thursday signed into law a bill that calls for constructing 700 miles of fencing along the U.S./Mexican border, the Associated Press reported.The new legislation gives the Department of Homeland Security an 18-month window to crack down on illegal border crossings, stating that DHS must by then prevent all illegal entries by land or water, AP said.
Financing for the project remains an issue, as the bill contained no new funding and the $1.2 billion previously set aside by Congress would not be sufficient to complete the entire 700-mile length of fencing, AP reported. Transport Topics
Murphy Named Chairman of Governors Highway Safety Association
Christopher Murphy was elected the new Chairman of the California Governors Highway Safety Association, the group said Monday.Murphy has worked in California's Office of Traffic Safety for 20 years, most recently as director and governor's highway safety representative, a post to which he was appointed by Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) in 2005.
Murphy has indicated that reducing drunken driving is a top priority for the agency, with a special focus on repeat offenders and those who violate their probation or fail to appear in court.
The Governors Highway Safety Association represents the highway safety offices of states, territories, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Indian Nation. Transport Topics
