Two Convicted in Deadly Smuggling Case
Two men could face life in prison after being convicted for their roles in last year's human smuggling attempt that ended in the deaths of 19 illegal immigrants in a tractor-trailer, news services reported.The men were found guilty of conspiracy and aiding in the transport of immigrants that resulted in death.
Prosecutors accused the defendants of being members of a smuggling ring that stuffed a tractor-trailer with more than 70 illegal immigrants and tried to transport them from south Texas to Houston in May 2003.
Four Cameras Installed at Port of New Haven
Connecticut officials last week unveiled four new security cameras at the Port of New Haven Wednesday that would allow police to monitor ships entering the harbor around the clock, the Associated Press reported.New Haven is home to Yale University, a series of federal buildings and one of New England's busiest ports. The port supplies 81% of petroleum and byproducts to the Northeast and serves two military bases, AP said.
Funding from the Department of Homeland Security paid for the cameras, AP said. Transport Topics
