FMCSA Seeks to Improve Roadside Inspections

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said it was seeking public comments through Oct. 17 about new technologies that could help improve the effectiveness and efficiency of roadside inspections of commercial vehicles.

FMCSA said the information collected would be used to develop a “partially or fully automated” system that would include ways for monitoring and regulating a motor vehicle’s condition and driver practices, including hours-of-service compliance.

The current inspection process includes five inspection levels, some taking 30 to 40 minutes, FMCSA said. Transport Topics

DOT Earmarks $80 Mln. to Repair Damaged Roads

Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta Tuesday approved $80 million in emergency relief funds for 18 states to repair roads and bridges damaged by recent flooding, storms or other catastrophic events.

The funds will be used to “rebuild communities . . . after tragic events knock out roads and bridges,” Mineta said. “After a crisis, residents know they can count on the federal government to help them get moving again.”

DOT’s Federal Highway Administration will reimburse states for costs associated with reconstructing or replacing damaged highways and bridges, establishing detours, removing debris, and replacing signs, lighting and guardrails.

"Restoring damaged roads helps communities return to normal after an emergency,” said acting FHWA administrator J. Richard Capka. “The emergency relief funds are vital to getting people and goods moving again as quickly as possible.” Transport Topics

TSA Names Chicago Airport Security Director

The Transportation Security Administration Tuesday named Mark Haught acting federal security director for Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Haught has served as deputy security director at the airport since May 2004.

“I feel confident that Mark will be committed to serving the agency . . . with the same level of integrity and work ethic that Mike Zunk displayed during his three years as federal security director," said James Welna, acting area director for TSA.

Prior to joining TSA, Haught served as deputy assistant director for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in Washington, and as a member of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency where he served as program director for antiterrorism research from 1993 to 1999. Transport Topics

BearingPoint Wins N.Y.-N.J. Port Security Contract

Management consulting and system integration firm BearingPoint Inc. said Tuesday it was awarded a $5.2 million contract by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to improve cargo security procedures at the port complex.

The contract is to implement the third phase of the port’s Operation Safe Commerce project, which is designed to improve procedures for containerized cargo entering the country.

The OSC project is active at the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Seattle and Tacoma. The Department of Homeland Security oversees the program and the Office for Domestic Preparedness is the primary grant coordinator.

BearingPoint said it was previously awarded a contract in December 2003 to provide project management services for the early phases of the Port Authority's OSC efforts. Transport Topics
