Ridge Unveils Terror Readiness Initiative

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Wednesday that his department was undertaking a public education campaign to help Americans prepare for a possible terrorist attack, the Associated Press reported.

The message centered on communicating with family members in the event of an attack and assembling a disaster kit with a few days worth of critical supplies, AP said.

Ridge said that the campaign was being rolled out to avoid scaring citizens and offering some commonsense ideas to prepare for an attack, AP reported.

Included in a kit, Ridge said, should be water, food, medicine, duct tape and plastic sheeting, but all these items should be stored away and not immediately used, AP reported. Transport Topics

'Enforcement Blitz' Snarls Truck Traffic

An “enforcement blitz” by the U.S. Customs Service Tuesday tied up traffic in Windsor, Ontario, the Windsor Star reported.

Before noon on Tuesday, the Customs Service asked that all trucks crossing the Ambassador Bridge be stopped and inspected, the paper said.

About 60 trucks were inspected, closing the bridge off to commercial traffic for about an hour, the Star reported.

The Customs Service would not disclose the reasons for the stepped up inspections, the paper said. The United States has been on a heightened terrorist alert since Feb. 7. Transport Topics
