The Senate Commerce Committee on June 8 is scheduled to hear directly from Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx about the implementation of the five-year FAST Act highway law. Watch live via c-span.org at 2:30 p.m. EDT.

The $305 billion authorization seeks to improve multimodal freight connectivity by establishing a grant program, known as FASTLANE.

Foxx has touted the potential benefits of FASTLANE. While $4.5 billion is available for the program through 2020, DOT is making available $800 million for projects for fiscal 2016.

Delaware is among the states vying for FASTLANE funds this year to augment a freight corridor along Interstate 95. The recipients will be announced this year.

“Our nation needs a strong multimodal freight system to both compete in the global economy and meet the needs of consumers and industry,” Foxx said. “We now have an opportunity to fund high-impact projects that address key challenges affecting the movement of people and freight.”

The FAST Act was enacted in December, marking the first long-term highway bill in a decade. Commerce Committee members contributed provisions to the FAST Act meant to enhance truck safety.
