Second Annual 'Healthy Trucker Challenge' Promotes Wellness

PHILADELPHIA — Trucking executives and America’s Road Team captains are at it again. They are facing off at the Management Conference & Exhibition here to see which group will take the most steps throughout the convention.

This “Healthy Trucker Challenge” promotes wellness among the industry’s leadership.

“The challenge is a tremendous way to promote healthy habits and wellness in our industry,” said former American Trucking Associations Chairman Philip Byrd Sr., president of Bulldog Hiway Express, of North Charleston, South Carolina.

“I’m confident that I — and my fellow ATA executives — will more than keep up with America’s Road Team over the next few days.”

During the event, steps taken by Byrd, outgoing ATA Chairman Duane Long, incoming ATA Chairman Pat Thomas, Kevin Burch of Jet Express, Dave Manning of TCW, Barry Pottle of Pottle’s Transportation, and ATA President Bill Graves will be monitored.

At the conference’s culmination, the ATA leadership’s steps will be compared with steps taken by America’s Road Team captains. Last year, when the challenge debuted, the America’s Road Team captains defeated the leadership team.

“For truck drivers, it’s important to take advantage of the chances we have to stay fit and active,” said America’s Road Team Captain Richie Buitrago [Con-way Freight], who has been driving for34 years. “Over the next couple days, we’re going to show just how healthy truckers can be.”

Daily updates of the two teams will be posted in the ATA MCE exhibit hall and at the Healthy Fleet Booth, #1050.
