Search Continues for Stolen N.J. Truck

Authorities are still searching for a stolen tractor-trailer carrying a load of fertilizer and pesticides, a day after U.S. government officials issued a nationwide alert, Bloomberg reported.

There is no evidence that terrorists were involved.

The truck was stolen either Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning from Rockland Corp. in Parsippany, N.J., according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Gail Toth, executive director of the New Jersey Motor Truck Association, said it may have been taken by someone who thought it contained valuables. New Jersey ranks third in the nation in cargo thefts.

According to the newspaper, the trailer had been loaded Tuesday with landscaping products, primarily limestone. It also carried lawn fertilizer and liquid pesticide.

Some forms of fertilizer can be used in making explosives.

State police said the 2000 Freightliner cab is yellow, has the word "Penske" on the side and bears Indiana registration 171469. The 45-foot white trailer, a 1988 Fruehauf model with New Jersey registration T392VD, has "Rockland" in green letters on all four sides.

Rockland President Bob Wittpenn said tractor-trailers loaded with lawn fertilizer have been stolen before, but the thefts never before received this kind of attention.
