Saia Swings to Profit for 4Q, Year

Saia Inc. Monday reported a fourth-quarter profit compared with a loss a year earlier, as tonnage improved.

The net income was $700,000, or 4 cents a share, compared with a loss of $3.1 million, or 22 cents a year ago.

Operating income was $1.8 million, compared with an operating loss of $3.6 million a year earlier.

Revenue rose 11% to $224 million, as tonnage rose 6.1% year-over-year, the less-than-truckload carrier said in a statement.



For the full year, Saia earned $2 million, or 12 cents a share, compared with a loss of $7.9 million, or 59 cents, in 2009.

Full-year revenue rose 6% to $903 million. Operating income was $12.1 million, compared with an operating loss of $3.7 million a year earlier.

Saia is ranked No. 24 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
