Suspension and fifth-wheel manufacturer SAF-Holland introduced its ULX40 UltraLite trailer suspension-axle combination June 3.

The ULX40 is a unitized sliding-suspension unit designated for the dry-van and refrigerated van markets, said Jeff Talaga, executive vice president of the company's trailer suspensions business unit.

Talaga said the product utilizes mechanical rather than widely used air bag springs. He cited studies by major carriers Schneider and XtraLease that cited many advantages of mechanical versus air suspensions, including total cost of ownership.

SAF-Holland's ULX40 is the only mechanical suspension fully unitized with the axle on the market, he said.

The leaf springs are made of a composite material, rather than steel, which saves weight and maintenance costs, he said.

The unit is available with either drum or disc brakes.
