Quebec-based Canadian American Transportation Inc. signed a lease agreement with Ryder System Inc. for 100 compressed natural gas sleeper tractors in what Ryder said was its largest natural-gas deal to date in North America.

C.A.T., a truckload carrier in Coteau-du-Lac, becomes Ryder’s first natural-gas lease customer in Canada and its largest single natural-gas vehicle customer to date.

“As we continue to expand our natural-gas vehicle footprint, we are able to help more businesses convert their fleets to this cost-effective and environmentally friendly advanced fuel solution,” said Dennis Cooke, Ryder’s president of global fleet management solutions.

C.A.T., whose 325-truck delivery fleet travels from Montreal to Laredo, Texas, has shipped between the United States and Canada since 1978. It provides transportation services to the automotive, food, beverage, consumer packaged goods and electronics industries.

“C.A.T.’s natural-gas fleet program will enable us to be extremely successful in supporting our customers’ sustainability efforts,” company President Daniel Goyette said.

Ryder also will provide maintenance for the 100 CNG vehicles from Ryder’s Montreal service facility, which is being upgraded for compliance with natural-gas standards.

C.A.T. has been leasing trucks from Ryder for the past eight years. The natural-gas trucks are expected to reduce the fleet’s carbon emissions by more than 2,500 metric tons, Ryder said.
