etail sales rose 0.2% in September from August, the Commerce Department said Friday.
The uptick, which followed a 1.9% decline in August, was below economists’ estimates of 0.5%, Bloomberg reported.
Almost all trucking operations depend on the health of retail sales because such sales involve nearly every type of cargo.
Excluding automobile sales, which fell 2.8%, retail sales climbed 1.1%, more than expected, Bloomberg said.

Electronics and appliance store sales rose 0.8%, while furniture sales rose 1.2%.
Sales at general merchandise stores, including department stores, rose 0.9% after a 0.3% rise in August.
