Regulators, ATA Partner for Highway Safety Campaign

Federal trucking regulators and the association representing industry executives joined forces for a nationwide campaign meant to raise awareness about highway safety.

In “Our Roads, Our Safety,” the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, American Trucking Associations and the American Bus Association came together to emphasize tips for pedestrians, drivers, truckers and bicyclists for how best to travel together along roadways this summer.

The campaign urges motorists to “stay out of the ‘No Zones’ or blind spots at the front, back and sides” of trucks or buses, “make sure they can see the driver in the mirror” before passing a bus or a truck, and “anticipate wide turns and consider larger vehicles may require extra turning room.”

“FMCSA is pleased to work with a group of partners that are dedicated to safety and share our agency’s goal of reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities involving large trucks and buses on the road,” FMCSA Deputy Administrator Daphne Jefferson said on June 26.

The trucking industry is dedicated to “reducing vehicle accidents and to meet its safety goals, investing more than $9.5 billion on safety each year in the form of training, technology and developing safety messages like we’ve done in the Our Roads, Our Safety partnership,” ATA President Chris Spear said.
