Rail intermodal traffic fell 7% last week and carload traffic dipped 1.1% compared with the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday.Intermodal volume fell to 213,512 trailers and containers for the week ended Friday, the rail trade group said in its weekly report. Container volume fell 5.5%, while trailers declined 11.2%.AAR estimated total carload ton-miles for the week were 33.5 billion, a 0.6% uptick from a year ago. Railroad volume is considered an important economic indicator. Intermodal traffic, which tends to be higher-valued merchandise than bulk commodities, uses trains for the long haul and trucks for the shorter distance at either end of the trip.
