ualcomm Inc., which already dominates the market for truck in-cab communications systems, plans to begin on-road testing of a next-generation product with greatly expanded capabilities in the summer, company executives told Transport Topics.

Chris Wolfe, president of Qualcomm’s Wireless Business Solutions division, said company in-siders refer to it as their “stealth technology” that would be many times faster and allow for a much wider range of data transmissions than systems now on the market.

“We have shown it to some of our customers behind closed doors,” Wolfe said. “We want to keep it under wraps until we deploy it.”

Qualcomm already claims 65% of the market, with more than a half-million of its OmniTracs systems in trucks worldwide and more than 300,000 operating in the United States.
