Qualcomm May Return to the Trailer-Tracking Market

Qualcomm Inc., which suspended business in tracking unattached trailers in early September, is exploring several ways to re-enter the trailer-tracking market with a low-cost solution that heretofore hesitant motor carriers could embrace, according to Chris Wolfe, president of Qualcomm’s Wireless Business Solutions group.

Qualcomm said at the time it was shutting down its untethered TrailerTracs system until it could develop a new communication platform that would alleviate concerns about the long-term viability of analog cellular networks used to transmit data between the trailer and dispatchers.

Qualcomm’s answer to potential analog coverage problems is a multimode device that can automatically switch between cellular analog and dual digital frequencies, Wolfe told Transport Topics.
