he average retail price of diesel fuel declined 1.3 cents a gallon to $1.984, the Department of Energy reported Monday.

Diesel has now fallen 13.2 cents over the past three weeks, and has dipped in seven of the past eight weeks since hitting a record $2.212 on Oct. 25. The most recent price was the lowest since $1.912 on Sept. 20.

However, despite the recent decline, diesel is 48 cents higher than a year earlier, based on DOE figures. Trucking burns about 650 million gallons of diesel each week.

DOE also said the average retail price for regular gasoline fell 3.2 cents to $1.815 a gallon, the lowest since $1.812 on April 26.

Trucking uses about 290 million gallons of gasoline each week. The price has declined eight of the past nine weeks.

The price of diesel declined throughout the entire country, with the exception of DOE's Gulf Coast region, where it rose 1.2 cents to $1.922. However, that remained the cheapest price for a gallon of diesel in the nation.

The largest drop was in the Rocky Mountain states, where the price fell 6.1 cents to $1.988.
