Port of Oakland to Launch GPS Tracking System

Trucking companies, owner-operators and shippers at the Port of Oakland, Calif., and Oakland’s World Trade Center will be able to track freight using Global Positioning System technology starting in about six months.

Under the program, GPS-enabled cellphones will be given to participants to track the location of trucks and containers, said port spokeswoman Marilyn Sandifur.

Sandifur said the program was developed in conjunction with Xora, a company that provides GPS service, Sprint Nextel and International Asset Systems, an intermodal equipment tracking company.
